What is breathing air?
Breathing air is a mixed gas in accordance with NEN-EN 12021, consisting of oxygen and other gases (such as helium and/or nitrogen – Heliox, Nitrox), with a maximum content of oil, CO, CO₂ and moisture. This gas serves as a safe breathing air supply in hazardous environments. It ensures that firefighters and other emergency responders, professional and recreational divers, classifiers, spray booth operators, and employees in the (bio)chemical industry can safely carry out their tasks in dangerous surroundings.
Products for breathing air applications at Q Plus
Our breathing air range includes products in accordance with NEN-EN 14593-1 and NEN-EN 14594, such as: generators, quick couplings, plugs, hoses, and hose reels.
Quick couplings with short and long profiles
The quick couplings and plugs are divided into the short profile (ESI1A) for belt and mask connections, and the long profile (ESI2A) for the pressure reducer/service unit. This prevents accidental connection of excessive breathing air pressure to the mask. The quick couplings feature a modified two-hand release, ensuring that accidental disconnection is not possible.
The ESI1A coupling can be connected to the ESI2A plug. The ESI1A plug can only be connected to the ESI1A coupling and not to the ESI2A quick coupling. These profiles are interchangeable with the common firefighter profiles, allowing connection to breathing air supplies of emergency responders.
If you prefer not to be interchangeable with other parties’ breathing air systems, we recommend Staubli quick couplings, which feature a unique profile.
Hoses with guaranteed breathing air supply
The breathing air hose falls under the Personal Protective Equipment Regulation 2016/425 and meets the important requirement that it cannot kink under any circumstances, ensuring a guaranteed breathing air supply even under the toughest conditions. The odour- and taste-free hose is equipped with an anti-static inner wall, is highly flexible, and thanks to its PVC construction, strong and wear-resistant without tearing.

In-house crimped connection coupling
The connection coupling (female thread/male thread) must be permanently fitted to the hose (crimped).
This hose can be combined with both the short and long profile breathing air couplings and hose reels intended for breathing air.

Breathing air hose reels with extended reach
The stainless steel 304 breathing air reel is fitted with a breathing air hose with an internal diameter of 8 mm, 10 mm, or 12.7 mm and a length of 20 metres. In addition to offering an extended reach, it also ensures a safe and tidy work floor when the hose is not in use.

Continuous Supply of Breathing Air
Breathing air generators are two-column filters that remove moisture, CO (carbon monoxide) and COâ‚‚ (carbon dioxide) from the supplied air. The CO is converted into COâ‚‚ by a catalyst, and the COâ‚‚ is then removed from the air using activated carbon. The dew point of the air is also dried to a prescribed dew point value in accordance with EN12021:2014.
The breathing air generator operates on the principle of Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA), whereby one column filters the air while the other column is regenerated with a portion (15%) of the cleaned breathing air (purge air) to remove collected moisture and COâ‚‚. This enables the generator to supply breathing air continuously.
This breathing air generator is equipped as standard with a purge air saving system, making it more energy-efficient than other models on the market. The saving system reduces purge air consumption by up to 60% at a typical load of 30% to 40% of maximum capacity.
