These cylinders are supplied with compressed air on one side only for actuation. A spring returns the unloaded cylinder to its initial position with a low output force (normally out). This type of design is also commonly known as a pull cylinder.
If, for safety reasons, an immediate return from the working position is required in the event of an interruption of the compressed air supply, these cylinders are of fundamental importance. In such cases, the spring or the push force brings the piston rod back to its rest position.
You will encounter these cylinders in applications where short strokes and immediate response are required. The spring inside the cylinder chamber is dimensioned in such a way that tension remains low, thereby preventing unnecessary energy losses.
